Libyans express solidarity with Syria
Syrians living in Libya along with Libyans gathered at Martyr’s Square in the capital, Tripoli, on Friday to rally against President Bashar al-Assad as they urged him to relinquish his power.
At least 300 supporters took part in the demonstrations which were organized by the Syrian community in Libya. They chanted slogans, waved flags, and condemned the ongoing violent crackdown on protesters.
One resident likened the Syrian struggle against an oppressive leader and regime to that of Libya which revolted against its late leader Muammar Qaddafi.
The demonstration in Tripoli coincided with the death of 24 people in the Syrian town of Homs during protests after Friday prayers.
According to various humanitarian organizations, 4,600 Syrians are estimated to have died in the country since the uprising against Assad began mid-March.
