Islamist groups denied on Tuesday being involved in the killing of an Egyptian student who was stabbed to death in Suez last Sunday.
The victim, Ahmad Eid, a 20-year-old engineering student, was walking with his fiancée and cousin in the Arbaeen neighborhood, when three bearded men on a motorcycle, wearing white ‘Gelabiyas’ (traditional dress), stopped him, Egypt’s local papers reported.
The young man allegedly insulted the men after being rebuked for walking with a woman. One of the three men stabbed him with a knife and the three reportedly drove away on their motorbikes.
As rumors began to spread online about an Islamist group being behind the murder, Al Ahram newspaper reported that spokesman Sheikh Hamada Nassar from the Islamist party, Al-Jamaa Al-Islamiya, had “accused the remnants of the old regime of associating these accidents with Islamic movements without evidence, in an attempt to defame Islamists.”
Abdel-Rahman el-Barr, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Guidance Bureau, also denied any links with the incident in a statement published on the group’s official website.
After he was stabbed, the young victim was taken to Suez Hospital for treatment before being transferred to a hospital in nearby Ismailiya where he succumbed to his injuries.
His father, Hussein Eid, refused to accept condolences until his son’ s murderers have been brought to justice.
