The Prophet’s Mosque heart and spine

The control room, located in a quiet corner in the Prophet's Mosque, is the pulsing heart for all operations in the mosque. People who work here behind the scene use advanced technology and equipment employed to serve the mosque’s visitors and the worshipers.

“All electrical, mechanical and electronic operations are done in the main control room in the Prophet’s mosque. More than 5 thousands operations are controlled and supervised here. The map behind us shows the old mosque, the first Saudi expansion as well as the expansion done by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Fahed Bin Abdulaziz. In addition to that, we have 27 mobile domes and 12 umbrellas inside the mosque, and all the operations are controlled from the control room,” said Fahed Hakim, a Senior Project Manager in the Prophet's Mosque.

The channels extend from this “heart” to pump the electronic “blood” to all corners of the Mosque, as well as the veins that carry information about the status of each part.

“There are more than 5000 operations managed from the room including, lighting, and the opening of domes and umbrellas. All of them are stored on the computer and automatically executed; the technicians’ work is limited to the monitoring and supervising,” said Abdul Wahed al-Hattab, Director of Public Relations and Media in the General administration of the mosque.

The watchful eyes sit in the control room observing all the corners, and brains determined to resolve every problem. Their happiness is clear because they don’t think of this as regular work, but also as charity for the sake of God.
