Zamzam water on demand in Ramadan

In the Muslim faith, the Well of Zamzam reflects the heavens’ care of female believers as it was a gift from God sent to Hagar, wife of Abraham and mother of Ismail. When crossing the desert with her son Ismail, Hagar opened her arms to the sky and said: “God will watch over us.” Indeed, the well was revealed to Hagar and its waters continue to flow till our days.

The water of Zamzam is now available to visitors and pilgrims in containers and water fountains in the prayer chambers and halls of the Holy Mosque.

“There are 17 thousand containers of Zamzam water in the Holy Mosque. They are equally distributed on all prayer spaces and corridors inside the mosque and in the exterior courtyards,” said Abdul Mohsen Bin Hemaid, head of projects and studies at the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques.

During the Saudi era, Zamzam Well had undergone a series of improvements in its infrastructure and surrounding spaces. Its canals were cleaned, purified and equipped with devices to ensure that pilgrims can have access to its water.

Moreover, a factory was established to package Zamzam water in order to organize the distribution of water to the pilgrims and visitors of Mecca. The factory produces 200 thousands bottle per day and charges 5 Saudi Riyals for a 10-liter bottle. The factory’s daily production doubles in Ramadan due to the high demand on the water of Zamzam.

“We have carriers that transport the water from Mecca to Medina. Samples of water are taken to be tested in the laboratory before being poured in basins. Water then passes through a purifying and filtering network before arriving to the filling point. Afterwards, the mosque’s workers distribute the water in the chambers and halls of the Prophet's Mosque,” said Saud al-Awfi from Zamzam Water department at the Prophet's Mosque.

Zamzam Well is highly regarded among Muslims to the extent that the possession of Zamzam water became part of their prayer for well-wishing. “May God give you Zamzam Water to drink”, a Muslim would say to his brother, meaning: I pray that you get to perform pilgrimage in Mecca.
