Arab artists: Amal’s art created by a million dots

Emirati fine artist Amal al-Ghussain has taken art into a different perspective by drawing hundreds of dots that reflect an image.

She was born in Abu Dhabi in 1968 and is a member of the Emirates Fine Arts society. Al-Ghussain holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts specializing in dotting, design and print from the Fine Art faculty in Tripoli, Libya.

She faced a barrage of criticism for spending around three years focused on an intensive process of dotted drawing.

“The dot is the starting point of drawing and word; even in numbers we do need the dot which is zero,” Ghussain says.

In her early attempts at dotted drawing, Ghussain used water colors with the smallest brush size, using its sharply pointed head to render intricate dotted images reflecting the artist’s character.

“Falcon is an embodiment of freedom, and horse is synonymous with loyalty,” she says.

The Emirati’s paintings display tiny details, manually affixing one dot after another. However, the accumulation of dots creates a cohesive shape that renders the work closer to an impressionistic style.
