Skilled drivers will be pitted against each other on Friday to be named the UAE’s drift-driving king, reported local newspaper 7days on Thursday.
Competitors from around the country have been battling it out in the Red Bull Car Park Drift, Fast and Furious style.
Last week the competition was narrowed when Abdo Feghali revved up his Chevrolet Camaro and sped along at 70kph before sliding into a delicately controlled sideways drift on the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi.
Drifting refers to a motor sport technique where the driver intentionally over steers. This causes a loss of traction in the rear wheels of the car, experts manage to maintain control however.
Feghali’s drift lasted over 10 minutes and covered 11.18 kilometers, smashing the previous world record which stood at 5.8 km.
His team had been practicing for a full two months to perfectly execute the drift.
Experts are questioning just how the Lebanese pro-driver managed to drift for such a long period, taking corners at top-speeds and maintaining a sideways skid usually leads the tires to overheating.
How did Feghali do it?
“Well that is our secret,” he said, he went on to explain that his team had procured an ‘Easy Drift’ system. It is a mount that fits over the rear tires, “we start burning that until the easy drift tires burst and then we continue on the normal tires.”
As a sport, professional competitions are held worldwide. The fad started in the All Japan Touring Car Championship races over 30 years ago.
