Half the registered mobiles in the UAE are manufactured by Nokia, while Apple's iPhone 4S is ranked the country’s most popular smartphone, according to a review by the local Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).

Nokia manufactured 50 percent of registered mobile phones in the UAE, followed by Blackberry with a 10.7 percent share of the market, Samsung at 10.7 percent, Apple with 8.4 percent, and Sony Ericsson with 1.5 percent market share, according to the TRA.

Despite Apple having a relatively low share of the overall market, its iPhone 4S model was named the most popular in the smartphone category, which describes more expensive phones with larger screens and the ability to download applications.

The TRA report identified the market shares within the UAE mobile market, according to manufacturer, model, and operating system.

Symbian is the most commonly used mobile handset operating system in the UAE taking 50 percent market share, followed by iOS, Blackberry, and Android, the study showed.

“A core function of our role is to keep consumers informed about the state of the market … studies like this are therefore very valuable and it is our intention to continue to provide industry insights as much as possible," said Director General of the TRA, Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, commenting on the review.
