US Senator Lindsey Graham, a top ally of Donald Trump, said that White House will hold Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan personally accountable for any atrocities committed in and around Kobani, adding that the escalation could destroy the relationship between Washington and Ankara.
“Turkey has legitimate concerns about their security along the Syrian border. Those concerns can be met without the destruction of Syria, the destruction of a valuable ally, the Kurds, who helped us destroy ISIS,” Graham told Al Arabiya on Tuesday.
US Democratic lawmakers, joined by some of President Donald Trump’s fellow Republicans, introduced a resolution on Tuesday opposing Trump’s decision to withdraw US forces from Syria, the latest sign of deep disapproval in Congress of his action.
US Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will travel on Wednesday to Ankara to press Turkey to halt its offensive against Syrian Kurdish fighters, President Trump said.
“I am hoping reason will prevail but I will be introducing sanctions against Turkey Thursday and I do appreciate what the administration has done against Turkey through executive action. But more to follow,” Graham added.
