Snack attack: Faux food meets fashion in hot trend

Health may be the “in” thing, but when it comes to fashion, junk food is king. From pizza slice necklaces to the more avant-garde spaghetti and fried-egg hairbands from Japanese brand ii-Fake, food is infiltrating fashion in a big way. It all started in 2014 with Jeremy Scott’s now iconic leather McDonald’s french fries purse for Moschino, a bold ode to pop culture that urged the industry not to take itself so seriously.

Since then, the world’s top sartorial sleuths have been quick to identify nostalgia as a consumer soft spot. From Betsey Johnson’s playful donut purses to miniature macaroon earrings, this season it’s all about flaunting your food.

But health fiends need not despair. Earlier this year at London Fashion Week, British designer Charlotte Olympia sent a “fruit salad” of models down the runway, dressed as pineapples, bananas, watermelons and grapes. Here, we take a look at some of the quirkiest ways food is infiltrating fashion.
