The rate of breast cancer is rising in India with about 2,000 women detected with the disease every day, which makes it between 125,000 and 200,000 every year.

According to a Times of India report, around 60 percent of all the breast cancer cases at the hospital belong to either stage 3 or 4.

Dr Ajay Mehta, director at the HCG-NCHRI Cancer Centre in Nagpur district of Maharashtra, said that about 60 percent of the patients are from the early age group 40-45 years.

“In other countries, about 60 percent patients are in the age group above 60 years. Less that 10 percent patients at state 3 and 4 survive for more than five years,” he said.

The hospital has initiated a month-long campaign marking the International Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “Late marriage, late first child and avoiding breast feeding are some of the reasons that increase chances of breast cancer,” Mehta said.
