India’s delivery girls on the road to break gender stereotypes

Girls in the Indian capital of New Delhi are breaking another stereotype by joining the country’s first women-only cargo and logistics company.

Even cargo is a social enterprise that employs women from poor communities and trains them for employment opportunities with major e-commerce companies.

“Our objective is to allow women to have equal access to public spaces. Second objective is to increase women participation in workforce and also to challenge the gender norm by bringing women in the profession”, a company official said.

Breaking gender barrier

By choosing to work as a delivery girl, Rinki has joined women trying to break the gender barrier.

“People tend to say that girls are meant to manage the household. I don’t agree with this theory… I was interested in household work. I love going out. In this work, I get to travel across the city,” he said.

The company imparts training in four modules to the delivery girls – self defense, logistics, communication and two-wheeler riding.
