The United Nations General Assembly held a high-level plenary meeting Monday to address large movements of refugees and migrants.

UN Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon said the session represents a breakthrough in efforts to address the challenges of human mobility.

Filippo Grandi, the High Commissioner for Refugees said the world demands practical action and results so that forced displacement can be managed.

The issue of what to do about the world's 65.3 million displaced people takes centre stage at the General Assembly with leaders from the United Nations' 193-member states attending the summit on Addressing Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants in New York.

With more people forced to flee their homes than at any time since World War II, global leaders later on Monday approved a declaration aimed at providing a more coordinated and humane response to the refugee crisis that has strained resources and stoked divisions from Africa to Europe.
