Israel said Sunday it used a combination of air strikes and other means to destroy a tunnel stretching from the Gaza Strip into the country and continuing into Egypt. Israeli military spokesman Jonathan Conricus said the tunnel belonged to Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas and was intended for attacks as opposed to smuggling. A senior Hamas figure was shot in the head in Gaza and hospitalized in critical condition on Tuesday, in what officials said was an accident. Hamas spokesman Fawzy Barhoum said Imad al-Alami, a former member of Hamas’s highest political body, was shot while “inspecting his personal weapon in his home and is in critical condition”.
