Can Syrian society be saved?

Can harmony be restored among Syrians after the flames of war are extinguished? Can they overcome hatred and grudges after six years of fighting one of the most hideous civil wars?

How will the Sunni people from Aleppo, Homs, Hama and Idlib and the people of Madaya, Zabadani, Jawbar, Al-Yarmouk camp and Houran get over the atrocities committed by Assad’s forces, Nasrallah’s militias, Khamenei’s revolutionary guards, the Iraqi Popular Mobilization criminals and Afghan Hazaras?

How will Alawites, as in the ordinary people, be secure in the Syrian coast and mountains and Homs countryside? How can they be safe from the atrocious practices of ISIS, Al-Nusra and other groups?

As the leader of the state, he’s responsible for guarding social peace and for maintaining the country’s unity and deterring invaders. However, he brought sectarian gangs from across the world and handed over the country to Iranian invaders and allowed the Russians to intervene.

How will Christians live in Wadi al-Nasara, Aleppo, Homs and Damascus after dark extremist cultures spread?

The major criminal behind all this is the Assad regime. As the leader of the state, he’s responsible for guarding social peace and for maintaining the country’s unity and deterring invaders. However, he brought sectarian gangs from across the world and handed over the country to Iranian invaders and allowed the Russians to intervene. The regime sowed the seeds of civil strife and allowed bloodshed and theft and caused the displacement of millions of Syrians.

OPINION: Washington chooses Syria as its battleground

If it hadn’t been for it, the demonic ISIS group would not have been born, and al-Qaeda would not have blossomed in the country.

Syria's Unity

But let’s go back to the first question, can the people of Syria unite after this horrific experience? On which land will they do so?

Perhaps there is little hope as few days ago, Ash-Sharq al-Awsat published a news piece about the result of the secret dialogue sessions which the Syrians held in Berlin. Syrian figures from different ethnic, religious and sectarian components, i.e. Sunnis, Alawites, Kurds, Druze and Christians, came up with a document that consists of 11 articles on Syria’s unity and “individual accountability” which means that an entire group must not be held accountable for the acts of a single individual. This document reflected the consensus of the moderate bloc within the Syrian society. We hope this document forms a “social contract” that’s higher than the constitution.

According to the document which Ash-Sharq al-Awsat received a copy of, one of the articles is on “the code of conduct for Syrian co-existence.” It includes rules that govern the Syrian social contract after the war ends. These rules include “the unity of Syrian territories, acknowledging the situation as it is and understanding it, acknowledging that there are no winners or losers in the Syrian war as the only loser is the Syrian people and having all warring parties admit that no one is innocent of the violations committed against the Syrian people.”

OPINION: Revelations uncover bitter truths about Hezbollah’s dirty money

In the end, the war will end either via international and regional force or when the warring parties tire. But how will the Syrians’ lives be afterwards?

The Berlin document is a bridge to cross over from despair to hope.
