Houthi delegation continues efforts to derail Yemen talks

Monday, 27 June 2016

In Kuwait, the delegation of the legitimate government to Yemeni peace consultations will meet today with Thomas Shannon, US Assistant Secretary of State for Political Affairs, and British Prime Minister's envoy, while UN envoy Ismail Ould Sheikh Ahmed intends holding two separate meetings with the delegations of the government and the rebels to discuss the draft of a joint statement announcing the suspension of consultations for two weeks. The government's delegation meetings came after a meeting between the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the Houthi rebels' delegation, amid reports about American-British efforts to convince the Yemeni government to continue the dialogue with the rebels, and grant the United Nations special envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed more time to continue his efforts in order to bridge the gap of deep differences and reach a comprehensive solution acceptable by both sides.
