WATCH: Jordanian Christian writer shot dead ahead trial

Monday, 26 September 2016

Christian writer Nahed Hattar was fatally shot by an unidentified gunman on Sunday, September 25, outside a court in Amman where he was to stand trial on charges of offending Islam after allegedly sharing a satirical cartoon on social media, state news agency Petra reported.

The gunman was reportedly arrested at the scene, and authorities were investigating the incident. Attar was arrested in August over the caricature, which depicted a bearded man lying in bed with two women and asking God for a drink. Hattar said the cartoon was intended to show radical Islamist’s view of heaven.

Footage from the incident shows blood on the steps of the Palace of Justice in the Jordanian capital, and men gathered around a body.
