Amaq News, which acts as a semi-official news agency for Islamic State, released footage on Tuesday, October 18, showing masked militants patrolling the nighttime streets of Mosul, after Iraq launched a campaign to retake the city from the group. Armed forces said on Tuesday that they had liberated some 20 villages on the outskirts of Mosul in just 24 hours. Government and Kurdish forces, backed by US-led coalition air support, as well as Shia Muslim militias, advanced on the city as smoke.
