Europe will “pay the price” if it arms Syrian rebels, Reuters reported President Bashar al-Assad as saying on Monday.
“If the Europeans deliver weapons, the backyard of Europe will become terrorist and Europe will pay the price for it,” he said in an excerpted interview for German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
Referring to statements that his regime has used chemical weapons, Assad said: “Had Paris, London and Washington only one [piece of] evidence for their claims, they would have submitted this to the world.”
The full interview is due to be published on Tuesday.
Last week, Washington accused the Syrian government of using chemical weapons including sarin nerve gas.
The U.S. administration said it would now be providing “military support” to rebels.
“The American decision to arm armed terrorist groups demonstrates... the direct involvement of the United States in the Syrian bloodbath,” the official said, as quoted by AFP.
“This raises serious questions about their good faith when it comes to finding a political solution in Syria,” the official added.
