Saudi widow who supports 9 children appeals for help

Published: Updated:

JAZAN — A Saudi mother of nine who tragically lost her husband in a car accident has launched a desperate call for help.

Um Hassan and her husband were already leading a tough life in the town of Sabyah, Jazan Province.

However, the cohesion of the family and the presence of a breadwinner was enough to ensure they lived happily enough.

The husband worked hard to feed his wife and nine children.

Their home, reported Al-Hayat newspaper, was humble and lacked many essentials but the family's strong faith and the meager income of the husband somehow got them by.

Life changed for Um Hassan and her children when her husband died suddenly in a traffic accident.

Um Hassan found herself responsible for the family.

She said: “I am unable to work because of my chronic diseases. I have diabetes and high blood pressure, while my right hand is deformed.”

Um Hassan said her biggest fear was that the children might grow up without any bright future for them. “My eldest son Hassan, after whom me and my dead husband were nicknamed, is also sick and unable to work.”

Um Hassan said they are now living on charity handouts, which she said is not much.

In an appeal to welfare organizations, she said: "Please bring back the smiles to our faces and the happiness to our home.

“I cannot look my children in the eye. They are broken and humbled. A bad future may be waiting for them if they are not helped now.”
