Kerry urges ‘all nations to find diplomatic solution’ in S. China Sea

China claims virtually the entire South China Sea as its own, overlapping with territory claimed by other SE Asian governments

Published: Updated:

US Secretary of State John Kerry called on China to join in finding a “diplomatic solution” to rising tensions in the South China Sea, as the two countries began an annual dialog in Beijing on Monday.

He also told China it was “imperative to keep the pressure” on North Korea.

China claims virtually the entire South China Sea as its own, overlapping with territory claimed by other Southeast Asian governments. It has also started building airstrips on artificial islands it built on once-submerged reefs, much to the chagrin of the United States, which worries the buildup will impede freedom of navigation in the busy area.
