At least one Bahraini policeman was killed while two others were injured after an explosion near the house of hardline cleric Issa Qasim in the village of Diraz, a spokesperson for Bahrain Interior Ministry has confirmed.
Last month, Bahrain arrested 286 over terrorism charges, most of whom were found hiding in Qassim’s home. The hardline Shiite cleric faces expulsion from Bahrain after authorities revoked his citizenship last year for links to Iran and fomenting violence.
“He used places of worships as a political arena to serve foreign interests and maintained an environment supportive of violence and extremism,” an interior ministry spokesperson told Al Arabiya English last year.
“On many occasions, Qassim contravened the law, including by attempting to affect the elections with [religious edicts] fatawas encouraging people to boycott the democratic process thereby giving up their rights as citizens of Bahrain,” the spokesperson added.
