The mortal remains of Bollywood icon Sridevi, who passed away in Dubai on Saturday, has been cleared by the local authorities following wide speculation over the causes of her death, Al Arabiya has reliably learnt.

In a tweet released earlier this morning, the Indian consulate in Dubai said: “Update: Dubai Police has handed over the Consulate and the family members letters for the release of the mortal remains of the Indian cinema icon Sridevi Boney Kapoor so that they can proceed for embalming”.

The body will be taken for embalming before it is repatriated to Mumbai for her final rites. The Dubai Police later tweeted that the decision to release her body was taken after completion of legal procedures followed in such cases in order to ensure that all legal matters are taken care of for the pursuit of justice.

“The Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Emirate of Dubai has decided to hand over the body of Indian actress Sridevi Kapoor to her relatives on Tuesday after the investigation of her death and the closure of the incident,” it said.

Al Arabiya had reported on Monday that Sridevi’s autopsy report cited “accidental drowning” as the cause of her death and that Dubai Police has transferred the case to Dubai Public Prosecution for carrying out regular legal procedures followed in such cases.
