The Syrian army launched a military offensive against the opposition-held area of Homs on Saturday, reported Reuters.
Activists said jets and mortars pounded opposition-held territory and attacked the district of Khalidiyah, where state television reported they were making “great progress.”
Video uploaded on the Internet showed heavy explosions and clouds of white smoke after what the activists stated were airstrikes on the adjacent neighborhood of Jouret al-Shiyyah, according to Reuters.
The attack on Homs, the third largest city in Syria, follows steady military gains by Assad’s forces which are being backed by Lebanese Hezbollah militants.
According to Reuters those gains have consolidated Assad’s control over a corridor of territory linking the capital Damascus with the traditional heartland of his minority Alawite sect, from which the president hails, in the mountains overlooking the Mediterranean.
Al Arabiya television channel also reported fighting in Homs on Wednesday.
