Jordan man on trial over Australia embassy bomb threat
Ali al-Hasanat, who faces up to 15 years in jail if found guilty, denied any wrongdoing during the hearing of the state security court
A Jordanian man went on trial Monday accused of threatening to blow up the Australian embassy in Amman, in a message sent through his Facebook account.
Ali al-Hasanat, who faces up to 15 years in jail if found guilty, denied any wrongdoing during the hearing of the state security court in Amman.
The 37-year-old has been accused of using the Internet “to carry out activity that could expose Jordan to acts of aggression”.
The charge sheet alleges that in January he sent a message through his Facebook account to the Australian embassy in Amman “threatening to blow it up”.
A “picture of a bullet” was said to have been attached to the message.
Hasanat is also accused of posting another message “threatening to kill Australian tourists”, according to the charge sheet, a copy of which was seen by AFP.
The trial was adjourned to Monday to give Hasanat time to find a lawyer.
