Palestinian killed in Israeli raid in West Bank

A Palestinian was killed overnight during an Israeli military operation in the Qalandiya refugee camp near Ramallah in the West Bank, medical and security sources said Tuesday, according to Agence France Presse.
The 22-year-old man was killed when troops entered the camp to make an arrest, triggering clashes with residents, the sources said.
The Israeli army confirmed that its special forces had launched a raid on the camp and that there had been clashes.
Witnesses said residents of Qalandia refugee camp threw stones at the Israeli soldiers and the man killed, Mahmoud Adwan, 20, was watching from the roof of his home when he was shot, according to Reuters news agency.
Explosive devices were also hurled at the troops, the military said.
“Special forces came under attack in overnight operation in Qalandia," Israeli military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Peter Lerner said on social media website Twitter. "In the exchange one terrorist was killed and another wounded and detained."
Meanwhile, Israeli police arrested 10 members of extremist anti-Arab group Lehava which has been linked to an attack last month on a Jewish-Arab school, AFP reported.
“Ten suspects, members of the Lehava organisation, have been arrested for questioning following incitement and calls for racist acts of violence and terror,” the police said in a statement.
Among those arrested was the head of Lehava, which saw three of its members arrested last week on suspicion of torching a classroom at the Hand-in-Hand school, a rare symbol of coexistence in Jerusalem.
Violence in Israel and the Palestinian Territories has surged in the past few months.
Three Israeli teens were killed by Palestinian militants in the West Bank in June and in a retribution attack in July, a Palestinian youth was burned to death by three Israelis.
A July-August war between Israel and Islamist Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, killed 2,100 Palestinians and 67 Israeli soldiers and six civilians in Israel were also killed.
