Homemade bomb explodes in central Cairo
Airport officials heighten security measures after police find two bombs in different terminals of Cairo's main airport
Two bombs exploded in the Egyptian cities of Cairo and Alexandria on Tuesday, killing one civilian, security officials said.
The Cairo homemade bomb blast occurred near a busy square in Qasr al-Nil road, and was hidden in an electrical transformer, local media reported.
"A small bomb hidden in a roadside electrical transformer went off, damaging the transformer but causing no casualties," a police officer told Agence France-Presse.
Meanwhile, the blast targeting a police checkpoint Tuesday killed one civilian and wounded two others, including a 12-year-old boy, near Egypt's second city of Alexandria, police told AFP.
The explosion occurred on the western outskirts of the Mediterranean city near a residential neighbourhood.
Police said the blast missed the checkpoint, which had been moved from its earlier location, and wounded three people including the boy.
One of the two wounded adults later died in hospital.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for both attacks.
Islamist militants seeking to topple the government have carried out numerous bombing attacks on soldiers and police since the army toppled President Mohammad Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood in 2013.
Last week, ISIS's Egyptian affiliate staged coordinated attacks in the Sinai Peninsula which killed more than 30 security personnel.
Meanwhile, Cairo airport officials heightened security measures after police found two bombs in different terminals of the city's main airport, security sources told the news agency.
While no arrests were immediately made, airport security said they were reviewing video footage. The bombs were detected using electronic devices.
