The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has praised Saudi Arabia for approving an assistance package to the United Nations’ Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in an effort to reduce the agency’s financial deficit.

Last week, Saudi Arabia donated $35 million dollars to the UNRWA. An estimated $19 million of the total amount is expected to help the UNRWA with its $101 financial deficit.

The remaining part of the donation will be spent on education and health in Gaza, according to UNRWA’s official website.

Iyad Ameen Madani, the organization’s Secretary General said the International community need to support UNRWA, according to the official statement.

Earlier this month, Madani urged all OIC Member States to support UNRWA’s budget.

He said that helping the U.N. body was moral and humanitarian duty towards the Palestinian refugees.
