Footage broadcasted on Turkish television has emerged showing moments from the arrest of Ahmad Barakat, Syrian opposition figure Orouba Barakat and her daughter Hala’s suspected murderer.
The two women were found stabbed to death in their apartment in Istanbul last month.
In the video, the man can be seen handcuffed and escorted by two security men dressed as regular citizens.
Ahmad Barakat, 22, who was revealed to be Orouba’s relative, was arrested by Turkish authorities after surveillance cameras caught suspicious activity of him in a street near the victims’ house, the Turkish Hurriyet daily reported on Saturday.
According to Orouba’s sister Shaza, Ahmad’s father and their father are paternal cousins.
Shaza said Ahmad moved from Wadi Barada in the Damascus countryside to Edleb as part of a deal with the Syrian regime to transfer fighters few months ago. When he arrived in Edleb, he communicated with Orouba and Shaza to go to Turkey.
Shaza said she sponsored him just like she sponsored his family for five years in the past and her sister Orouba helped him find a job in Turkey.
The Syrian opposition website Orient where Hala worked as a journalist said that Ahmad’s motives remain unclear. Sources, however, said Ahmad had a key to the victims’ apartment so it was easy for him to help people enter the house.
Turkish dailies said the crime was committed by three people.
What’s really shocking however is that Ahmad participated in Orouba’s and Hala’s funeral and was tearful as he bid them farewell.
Syrian activists also circulated a snapshot from Facebook in which Ahmad wished Orouba a long life.
Shaza accused Ahmad of working for the Syrian regime and of carrying out the crime upon orders from it. Some media sources said this was not his first crime as he allegedly killed his brother in Wadi Barada during a family dispute.
