An Iranian academic named Dr. Abu El Fadl Beheshti attacked and insulted Ahwazi activist Shaima Silawi during a seminar held on Wednesday in Brussels, involving a film about the victims of mines in Iraq and Iran.
In the video about the incident, which was widely shared on social media sites, an Iranian activist who claimed to be working for the security of the Iranian embassy in Brussels is seen beating up and insulting the activist Shaima Silawi, a representative of the Ahwaz Human Rights Organisation (AHRO).
Silawi had criticized what she described as the catastrophic situation of the mined land in both Iran's Kurdistan, Iran and Ahwaz province, and the death and disability of thousands of citizens because of the mines buried in the land since the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988).
Following the seminar. Dr. Abu Al-Fadl Beheshti, who said he was working for the security of the Iranian Embassy, approached Silawi claiming that she was spreading hostile propaganda against the regime of the Islamic Republic and then began to beat her on the shoulder and insulted her with offensive words, , as per a statement by Ahwaz Human Rights Organization (AHRO).
The film, which was sponsored by the United Nations, the Swedish Embassy in Brussels and the Human Rights Documentary Festival, deals with the story of Colonel Fakhir Berwari, who was killed in demining operations in Iraqi Kurdistan as he worked with primitive tools.
“Dr. Abu al-Fadl Behashti, who claims to represent the Iranian regime, used an oppressive and terrorizing method that is against the law towards the human rights activist," the Ahwaz Human Rights Organization said in a statement.
The statement added that "Ms. Shimaa Silawi reserves the right to file a complaint against the aggressor before the Belgian authorities."
