Iraqi protesters shouted slogans like “Out, out Iran, Basra remains free” on Friday night as they set fire to the Iranian Consulate building in Basra.
Demonstrators also chanted slogans calling on Iran to refrain from interfering in Iraq’s internal and domestic affairs.
The storming of the consulate on Friday is being seen by many observers as a clear indication of how popular anger is centered at Iranian hegemony over Iraq’s political decision.
Sources confirmed to Al Arabiya English that more than 20,000 protesters came out on Friday in the streets of Basra. There were also reports of the withdrawal of security forces from the streets of the city.
