Iraq’s foreign minister has summoned the US and British ambassadors in Baghdad over air strikes carried out by the United States on Iraqi military positions overnight, a spokesman said on Friday.

“The Foreign Minister held an emergency meeting in which the ministry’s undersecretaries, advisors, and official spokesman discussed the measures regarding the recent American aggression. He has ordered the summoning of the United States and British ambassadors to Baghdad,” the spokesman said in a statement.

US air strikes targeting pro-Iranian military factions in Iraq early Friday killed one civilian and five security personnel, the Iraqi military said.

Three of the dead were Iraqi soldiers and two policemen, the military statement said, adding that 11 Iraqi fighters were also wounded, some of them critically.

The Pentagon said the United States had carried out strikes against five Iran-backed militia weapons storage facilities in Iraq, a day after a deadly rocket attack killed two American and one British service member.

“The United States conducted defensive precision strikes against Kata’ib Hezbolla facilities across Iraq,” a Pentagon statement said.
