Lebanese pro-Hezbollah TV channel al-Mayadeen said on Monday a rocket strike targeted the US base in the Conoco gas field, northeast of Deir Ezzor in eastern Syria, in retaliation for the American strikes on the Syrian cities of al-Mayadeen and al-Bukamal.

The pro-Iranian channel cited sources as saying that the “resistance” targeted the US base with 15 rockets which were aimed at the command headquarters of the US military base in the Conoco gas field.

A source told al-Mayadeen: “Several US soldiers were killed in the strikes that targeted the Conoco base in eastern Syria.” The TV channel also said the attack was carried out using Grad missiles and left four US soldiers dead.

Additionally, the “resistance” targeted the US base in al-Shadadi in al-Hasakah, northeast Syria, with three suicide drones, according to al-Mayadeen reporting.

There was no confirmation or comment by the Pentagon on the al-Mayadeen claims.

US Secretary of Defense Llyod Austin confirmed on Sunday American military strikes in Syria.

Austin said: “US military forces conducted precision strikes… on facilities in eastern Syria used by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Iran-affiliated groups in response to continued attacks against US personnel in Iraq and Syria. The strikes were conducted against a training facility and a safe house near the cities of Abu Kamal and Mayadin, respectively.”

He added: “The President has no higher priority than the safety of US personnel, and he directed today's action to make clear that the United States will defend itself, its personnel, and its interests.”

The US military strikes on Iran-linked targets in Syria come as the latest response to a series of attacks against US forces in Syria and Iraq amid an escalation of tensions in the region owing to the ongoing war between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas.
