The health ministry in Gaza said Sunday that at least 35,984 people have been killed in the territory during more than seven months of war between Israel and Palestinian militants.

The toll includes at least 81 deaths over the past 24 hours, a ministry statement said, adding that 80,643 people have been wounded in the Gaza Strip since the war began when Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7.

Divisions among Israelis have deepened over how Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has handled the war against Hamas after the attack that killed about 1,200 people and saw 250 others taken hostage. Israel says around 100 hostages are still being held in Gaza, along with the bodies of around 30 more.
