Saudi Arabia has appointed Faisal al-Mujfel as its new ambassador to Syria, the official Saudi Press Agency reported on Sunday.

This marks the first ambassadorial appointment to Damascus since the Saudi embassy was closed in 2012 during the Syrian civil war.

The decision follows the agreement between the two countries to restore diplomatic relations last year.
