Putin warns US over its defence systems in Europe

Putin said Russia is considering measures to ‘end threats’ from US anti-missile systems in Europe

President Vladimir Putin on Friday warned Washington that Russia will consider measures to “end threats” from US anti-missile systems in Europe but said Moscow would not be engaged in a new arms race.

“Now that these anti-missile elements have been installed we will be forced to consider putting an end to the threats emerging in relation to Russia’s security,” Putin said at a meeting, Russian news agencies reported. He insisted though that Russia would not be involved in a new arms race.

The United States switched on an $800 million missile shield in Romania on Thursday that it sees as vital to defend itself and Europe from so-called rogue states but the Kremlin says is aimed at blunting its own nuclear arsenal.
