Paris knife attacker of Chechen origin, parents in custody

Published: Updated:

French Judicial sources confirmed Sunday that a knife-wielding assailant who killed one person and injured four others in central Paris, was born in Chechnya in 1997.

The source added that the parents of the attacker who was shot dead by police on Saturday, were taken into custody by French authorities, as reported by AFP.

French prosecutor Francois Molins said witnesses reported that the suspect shouted “Allahu Akbar,” or “God is greatest” in Arabic.

Molins told reporters that based on the method of the attack, counterterrorism authorities are leading the investigation on potential charges of murder and attempted murder in connection with terrorist motives.

The ISIS group news agency claimed the suspect as one of its “soldiers” on Saturday night.
