Two more die as India WhatsApp ‘child kidnap’ rumors spread

Published: Updated:

Two men were killed in the north-eastern state of Assam in India this week by a large mob amid Whatsapp rumors linking them to child kidnapping.

Audio engineer Nilotpal Das and digital artist Abijeet Nath reportedly stopped to ask for directions in Guwahati when they were attacked by a mob.

However, these two are not the first victims of such attacks. Rumors of child kidnappings in India are being shared over Whatsapp and have already led to the death of six other people this month alone.

“When rumours start circulating on social media, it takes some time to stop them completely,” senior police official Mukesh Agarwal told BBC Hindi's Dilip Sharma.

The video of the attack went viral over the weekend. Residents took to the streets on Sunday to protests the killing of the two men believed to be innocent.

It is not yet clear how these rumors came to fruition. The sub-continent has seen an influx of cases relating to mob attacks and vigilantism.
