Thousands of Iranians blame their own government for economic instability

Published: Updated:

Iranian protesters are now blaming their own government for the high inflation and unemployment rates instead of the US President Donald Trump.

Demonstrators in Tehran city this week were chanting “Death to Khamenei” and “Death to Inflation.”

When the protests first began, citizens of Iran believed that outside sources and other foreign countries may be to blame for the economic instability amid reimposed US sanctions and Trump's withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal.

However, in the ongoing demonstrations, protestors are blaming their own president and government.

“Iran is trying to say Trump is behind all our miseries, but it is only the House of Khamenei (the supreme leader) that is to blame,” Murad, a 45-year-old electrician and father of three, told The Guardian.

“People are no longer blaming the president of a foreign country, they blame the leadership of this country,” he added.
