Iran official calls upset citizen ‘ignorant’ for bringing up economic decline
A video posted by former Iranian MP Hamid Rasaee on Twitter showed a frustrated citizen criticizing Iranian Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ali Motahari who, while visiting Golpayegan County, in the Isfahan Province, delivered religious lectures at a time when the country is witnessing deteriorating living conditions and people are suffering due to high prices and a decline in the economy.
While the citizen explained how people are suffering as a result of the deteriorating economy, saying that the price of the local Pride car has reached 45 million Toman (a superunit of the Iranian rial), Motahari replied: “You are foolish and ignorant. We came here to talk about religion.”

A cleric accompanying Motahari also slammed the citizen and threatened him saying: “We will put a bag around your head and arrest you.”
The citizen, however, continued to bravely ask Motahari questions and said: “Your duty is to respond to the people’s problems and not to travel 300 kilometers to deliver religious lectures. That’s the duty of clerics.”
This incident happened as popular protests continue across different areas due to a spike in prices, unemployment and decline of the local currency which has reached 110,000 rial for each US dollar.
