WATCH: Iraqi ambassador to Iran summoned to Baghdad after yelling at citizens

Published: Updated:

A video of Iraq’s ambassador to Iran Rajeh al-Mousavi yelling at Iraqi expats during a conference in Tehran was widely circulated on social media, upsetting many Iraqis and forcing the foreign ministry to summon him back to Baghdad for his behavior.

The video shows Iraqi expats in the background bringing up the dire situation the country is going through, including the water and electricity shortages, high corruption and unemployment.

People on social media called on the government to hold Mousavi accountable for the way he reacted.

Iraq’s foreign ministry’s spokesperson Ahmed Mahgoub said in a statement that the ministry regrets “the irresponsible conduct of the Iraqi ambassador to Tehran with Iraqi citizens.”

The statement added that Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari immediately ordered the return of the ambassador to Baghdad.

They said that an investigation of the incident is underway, and that the necessary procedures will be taken.

The ministry reminded all its diplomatic missions abroad “to serve citizens and help them” adding that the Embassy of Iraq in Tehran is a home for Iraqi citizens just like other missions.
