The German government is aware of reports of a planned prisoner swap for Russian dissident Alexei Navalny prior to his death and cannot comment on the reports at this time, a spokesperson told a press conference in Berlin on Monday.

Before his death, Navalny was close to being freed under a prisoner swap involving Vadim Krasikov, a hit man serving a life sentence in Germany, according to an ally of Navalny.
