An earthquake jolted Kazakhstan’s biggest city of Almaty on Monday, sending dozens of people scurrying to safety outdoors as sirens went off.

The quake of magnitude estimated at about 5 in Almaty by Kazakhstan’s emergencies ministry, was also felt in Bishkek, the capital of neighboring Kyrgyzstan.

According to Almaty’s Emergency Situations Department, the seismic event occurred at 11.22 a.m. local time.

The Astana Times reported that the earthquake prompted mass evacuations where residents left their homes for safety as emergency response teams initiated evacuations of various buildings.
