His wife Natalia Sadykova wrote on social media: “Today in Kyiv, near his own house, an assassination attempt was made on Aydos Sadykov’s life.”

Sadykov and his wife runs a well known opposition social media channel in Kazakhstan, heavily critical of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

He is wanted in Kazakhstan since last year.

Kyiv said it launched an investigation, adding: “According to preliminary information, an unknown person with a gun ran up to the car where the victim and his wife were, shot the man, and then fled”.

“The man is currently in hospital in bad condition. Law enforcement is taking measures to identify the attacker,” it added.

Sadykova later said that her husband had been operated on but that he was in a “serious condition”, calling for prayers “for him to survive.”

She accused President Tokayev of ordering the assassination.
