Qatar World Cup organizers have responded to concerns about conditions for migrant workers in the Gulf nation by publishing detailed standards that constructors must adhere to.

FIFA had given Qatar until this week to explain how welfare and living conditions for migrant workers building 2022 World Cup projects are improving, after heavy criticism from rights groups.

Qatari organizers had already published the key principles designed to protect workers’ rights last year, but on Tuesday they fleshed out the detail in a 50-page document.

Only companies directly building World Cup venues must abide by the charter, rather than those with government contracts for wider infrastructure projects.

And organizers insisted that just 38 construction workers are currently employed by them, building the Al Wakrah Stadium south of the capital Doha.
