British ambassador in Egypt jokes about the controversial ‘son of a garbage collector’ comments made by ex-justice minister
The British Ambassador to Egypt on Wednesday tweeted out an invitation for applications for the position of a Community Liaison Officer, adding that even “the son of a garbage collector” would be welcome to apply for the role.
“You want to work at the British Embassy? We welcome everyone and we welcome the son of a garbage collector,” tweeted Ambassador John Casson.
The tweet comes as a contrast to the now ex-Egyptian justice minister who was interviewed by TV Channel Ten and said “a judge should come from a social class suited to the job, with all due respect to garbage collectors” when asked his opinion on whether the son of a garbage collector could be appointed as a judge.
The comment made by Mahfouz Saber, the ex-justice minister, caused controversy in Egypt and resulted in his resignation from the post, after being branded a classist.
Egyptian Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab commented on the matter saying “the cabinet respects all layers of society and appreciates the workers in particular, and is convinced that they are involved in shaping the future of this nation.”
