Leaked video of Syrian man’s torture causes shock, outrage

Published:

A leaked video from one of the detention centers of the Syrian regime in Kafranbel shows the brutal level of violence being used by Syrian forces against alleged detainees.

Al Arabiya aired a portion of the video, saying the remainder of the video was too graphic to air.

The release of the amateur video comes a few days after the United Nations accused both the Syrian government and opposition fighters of committing “serious” rights violations.

U.N. human rights chief Navi Pillay renewed an appeal for the 15-nation council to refer the Syria conflict to the International Criminal Court but acknowledged that it would be a “political” decision.

The U.N. official also said that both the government and the rebels are receiving more and more weapons, which is fueling violence in a 16-month conflict against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

She said both sides appear to have committed war crimes.

The United Nations has said the violence has killed more than 10,000 people, while activist groups have put the death toll at more than 15,000.
