Lebanon caretaker FM contracts coronavirus in string of misfortune over past month

Lebanon’s caretaker Foreign Minister Charbel Wehbe has tested positive for the coronavirus, a statement from his office said Wednesday, giving the official a calamitous one month since assuming his role.

Wehbe was nominated to replace Nassif Hitti, who resigned as Lebanon’s top diplomat one day before the Aug. 4 explosions at the Port of Beirut.

Four days after the Beirut blasts, dozens of protesters stormed the foreign ministry building amid anti-government demonstrations.

Wehbe attended his first and last cabinet meeting on Aug. 10, during which the prime minister announced the government’s resignation responding to the demand of the people.
