Yemeni and European diplomatic sources predicted that the new UN envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffiths, could quickly engage in the Yemeni case, especially as he has been the leading candidate for the post for months and for visiting the region recently on several occasions.

The Yemeni government thanked the former UN envoy, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, noting that he presented many solutions and plans to resolve the situation in Yemen, and accused the Houthis of failing his mission.

On Monday, Ould Cheikh will step down from his post before his term expires in March.

United Nations Yemen mediator Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed will step down when his current contract finishes at the end of February after nearly three years in the job, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Monday.

"In this moment, his thoughts go first to the Yemeni people who are worn out by this conflict and are enduring one of the most devastating humanitarian crisis in the world," Dujarric said.
