Foreigners seeking employment in the UAE have to submit a certificate of good conduct before they are issued a work permit.
The new requirement came into force on Sunday, February 4, as part of background checks of foreign workers, before they are issued work permits.
It is estimated that there are 4.5 million foreign workers in the UAE.
According to the UAE Coordination Committee, the Good Conduct and Behaviour Certificate must be issued from the applicant’s home country or the country of their residency for the last five years.
Last month, Emirates news agency WAM had reported about this new rule unveiled in a Cabinet Resolution No. (1/8#) for 2017.
In most countries, the document can be obtained from the police or a government department.
It must also be certified by the UAE embassy in that country or through the attestation centre of the customer happiness centres of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
The new requirement does not cover sponsored dependent family members and tourists.
Expatriates already in the UAE who want a new visa can apply to the police department for a certificate. The two requirements for the certificate will be the Emirate ID and email address.
The committee, which includes representatives of relevant government authorities, explained that this procedure is part of the UAE Government's efforts to create a more secure community.
