Kuwait confirms eight new coronavirus cases, total now 112: Spokesman

Kuwait recorded eight new coronavirus cases within the past 24 hours, a health ministry spokesman said on Sunday, bringing the total to 112 in the country.

Three of the new cases are associated with travel to the United Kingdom, three others came into contact with the three who traveled to the UK. One of the cases recently arrived to France via the United Arab Emirates, added the spokesman. The eighth case is associated with travel to the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Meanwhile, nine people have recovered as of Sunday, according to the spokesman. He also said three people with preexisting conditions are in critical conditions in the intensive care unit (ICU). Another person is also in the ICU but is in stable condition. A total of 103 people are receiving medical treatment due to the new coronavirus.

Arabian Gulf countries going into lockdown

The announcement comes as the countries of the Arabian Gulf passed more measures aimed at stopping the spread of coronavirus in the region.

On Saturday, Kuwait announced it would close shops, malls, and barbershops to prevent the spread of the virus.

On Sunday, Dubai announced it was shutting down all gyms, electronic gaming centers, and spring camps, as well as museums, historical sites, and public libraries. The UAE currently has 86 recorded cases of coronavirus.

Saudi Arabia has also stopped all incoming flights for two weeks and suspended entry for the Islamic pilgrimage of Umrah. There are currently 103 recorded cases in the Kingdom.

Bahrain, Oman, and Qatar have also taken measures to control the spread of the virus.
